Canstruction® is the most unique food charity in
the world! Canstruction® Inc. is a foundation of
the Society for Design Administration and a
registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that
holds annual design and build competitions to
construct fantastic, giant sized, structures
made entirely out of canned food. In each city
after the structures are built and the winners
declared the creations go on view to the general
public as giant art exhibits. At the close of
the competitions all of the food used in the
structures is donated to the local food
banks/coalitions for distribution to community
emergency feeding programs.
Canstruction® was founded in 1992 by Cheri
Melillo and has since raised millions of pounds
of food for food banks in participating cities
across the world. With more than 140 cities and
over 30,000 volunteers participating in
Canstruction® competitions, Canstruction® has
grown to become one of the largest food drives
for food bank donations in the world.

WHAT IS Canstruction®? Canstruction® is the most
unique food charity in the world!
A foundation of the Society for Design
Administration (SDA), Canstruction® is a
Trademarked design/build competition currently
held in cities throughout North America
Australia and cities from around the world will
soon be participating. Teams of architects,
engineers, and students mentored by these
professionals, compete to design and build giant
structures made entirely from full cans of food.
It takes 8-12 weeks and thousands of cans of
food to create a structure.
The results are displayed to the public as
magnificent sculpture exhibits in each city
where a competition is held. The public is
invited to donate canned food at the time of the
exhibition. At the close of the exhibitions all
of the canned food used in the structures is
donated to local food banks (in this case, to
The Community Kitchen) for distribution for
emergency feeding programs. The exhibit may be
displayed from a few days to two weeks, whatever
fits into the KSC calendar.
Since 1992, Canstruction has contributed over 15
million pounds of food to community food banks
demonstrating that we can win the fight against
hunger.
Design and Construction Industry professional
associations that have partnered with the SDA in
organizing local competitions include the
American Institute of Architects, the Society
for Marketing Professional Services and the
International Interior Design Association.
The closest event currently held to the south is
Boston, MA; to the north, Burlington VT. This
exciting competition to aid in the fight against
hunger could be the crown jewel event of the
Monadnock Region. The Community Kitchen and
Daniel V. Scully, Architects, feel that Keene
State College is an excellent choice as partner
in this venture. KSC is centrally located, has
an eager volunteer base and offers a perfect
venue for the sculptures in the L.P. Young
Student Center Atrium.
